There are three main approaches to implementing SAP S/4HANA: Greenfield, Brownfield and Bluefield.The Greenfield approach is designed for organizations that are starting with S/4HANA from scratch. The Brownfield approach is appropriate for organizations that have an ECC system in place but want to move to S/4HANA. By using the Bluefield approach, you can perform the SAP system conversion with an empty client. This allows SAP to dramatically improve the initial data accuracy after the conversion process. In addition, the Bluefield Approach provides a clean state to allow you to deploy additional SAP solutions with minimal configuration issues.

The adoption of a particular approach depends entirely on your business requirements. For customers that are satisfied with their current solution and just want to stay there yet have a desire to adopt innovations delivered by S/4HANA, Brownfield approach is the best to start with.
